What is Loom?
Giving video feedback to our colleagues doesn't seem so unusual anymore.
Loom is a tool designed to make screen recording with a camera and microphone as easy as possible. Sounds trivial? If you've ever struggled with no audio, choosing the right source and giving permission to record, you probably understand.
Loom has been on the market since 2016, and in 2023 it was acquired by Atlassian - the company behind Jira and Confluence. History has come full circle - just five days after launch, one of Atlassian's employees started using Loom, and the company was the first to buy licenses for its employees.
Why do teams use Loom videos?
- Whether you’re explaining a bug, demonstrating a feature, or leaving feedback, video is often clearer than text. Loom allows you to record your screen, camera, and voice, helping your team better understand the issues at hand.
- No need for external tools, and no complicated software. Loom video can be recorded right from the issue, comment or page and will be embedded directly there. Viewers can watch videos at speed and add comments and reactions.
- It’s great for remote teams. You can see the asynchronous video at any time and watch it as many times as you need. As Mike Cannon-Brookes, co-founder and co-CEO of Atlassian said "async video is the next evolution of team collaboration, and teaming up with Loom helps distributed teams communicate in deeply human ways.”
- Built-in AI functions give your recording a title, create a summary and divide the recording into chapters. You can also turn it into a text document, a message or a new Jira issue.

Loom extension in Jira Cloud
Loom recording extension is now available directly from the Jira and Confluence Cloud. How do you get started? We will walk you through it step by step.
Merging Atlassian and Loom accounts
Once a Loom subscription has been purchased for your team members, the first step to using Jira and Loom together is merging your Atlassian account with your Loom account. To do this, you need to meet two criteria:
- You have a Loom account under the same email address as your Atlassian account.
- You have attempted to join a Loom workspace that is linked/managed with Atlassian.
❗Important: Merging your account doesn’t mean merging your license, neither in Atlassian nor in Loom. See the Loom FAQ page and Atlassian Support article for more information. Check Loom pricing here.
Loom videos that you record are stored in your Loom library and follow the default permissions of your team’s Loom workspace.
Recording Loom video in Jira
Once you have merged your accounts, you are ready to start recording. Get your camera and microphone ready and go to one of your tasks/issues. Click the +Add button and find the New Loom Video button. This will allow you to record your tab while remaining visible and heard. After recording you can insert it, copy the link to the video or edit it in the Loom page.

Creating a new Jira issue from the Loom video with AI
Loom's AI features can be really useful. AI will analyze your video to create a title, summary, chapters, cut out silence and filler words. More interestingly, you can automatically turn your recording into a doc, email/message or new Jira issue.
How do you do this?
Go to your recorded Loom video at Loom.com and click the "Create a bug" button in the right-hand menu.

Why can't I see the Loom features in Jira?
The Loom extension is currently supported on Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera and Brave browsers. If you're using a different browser, you won't be able to record a video in Jira or through the browser extension.
If you don't see the Loom-related options under the +Add button, it may also mean that the Loom extension hasn't been rolled out to your account yet. You can contact Atlassian support to resolve this issue.
Why can't I record my face in a different tab?
Currently, Loom in Jira does not have the ability to record video from a camera on another card. If this is important to you, use the Loom Chrome extension to record the video and then paste the link in the Jira issue. Some tabs cannot be recorded because they are not really tab (for example PDF documents) and do not contain code to embed extensions.
How to use Loom in Confluence?
Knowledge centers can be more than just articles - using Loom in Confluence will allow you to add screen recordings to your pages and spaces. A big advantage is the simplicity of the recording, where we don't have to leave Confluence and have all the recording settings in one place.
Record Loom video in a Confluence space
The first way to add a Loom video to Confluence is to add it as a file to our space. It will be visible in the page tree. You can add it by clicking the +Create button at the top of the page or the + icon in the list of pages.
Record Loom video on a Confluence page and whiteboard
To record a video in the Confluence page all you need to do is find a camera icon on the top menu above the page. Then set up your camera and audio settings and start recording 🙂
